NetworkingThe Networking and Telecommunications Services (NaTS) is subdivided into two functional groups. The primary mission of Telecommunications is the support of voice related services. Networking is responsible for all the aspects of the data network. With the deployment of Voice over IP (VoIP), the separation of services between the two increasingly diminishes. The Networking group oversees the design, installation, traffic management, monitoring, maintenance and support for both the wired and wireless education and research networks campus wide. This also includes four remote locations. The department also sets wiring standards for basic service as well as for upgrades, remodels and new construction. Backend services needed for network use are also supported. These are services such as DNS, DHCP, NTP RADIUS Authenticaion and VPN services. The campus wired network is predominately switched 10/100Mbps to the desktop. 10/100/1000 Mbps connections are available in newer buildings and in some older buildings where wiring and hardware has been replaced to support gigabit. Campus backbone and interbuilding connections are gigabit. Wireless networks are currently bsaed on 802.11b/g. Future buildings or upgrades will include 802.11n functionality. | |||
