Virus Information

At UT Dallas we use a multi-pronged strategy to deal with viruses. We provide McAfee anti-virus software from Network Associates free of charge to all staff, faculty and students, both for on-campus use and off-campus use. On campus, we install the software on all workstations that connect to the CAMPUS active directory. It may also be downloaded from two locations on our websites; the www.utdallas.edu/ir/local/mcafee/ page, which is restricted to on-campus access only, and the NetID site, which can be accessed from anywhere in the world by using your UT Dallas login.

We require McAfee anti-virus protection on all UT Dallas Windows servers by policy, run McAfee GroupShield on our Exchange 2003 cluster, run both clamav and McAfee's uvscan on our gateway server and we block executable attachments both at our gateway and on the Exchange cluster. We also monitor our network constantly for viral and worm activity originating from our network.

In addition to these protections, we use Microsoft's SUS (Software Update Service) to keep Windows computers patched and up to date, and we analyze the patch condition of computers on our network on a routine basis. We also, by policy, remove from the network any computers that are detected with virus infections that threaten the health of our network.
